Synopsis:

In a futuristic thriller, a veteran of Sarajevo must escort a young woman pregnant with a mutant embryo, a genetically modified messiah whose birth may signal the end of human life as we know it. A cult novel in France. Set in the hidden "flesh and chip" breeding grounds of the first cyborg communities and peopled by Serbian Mafiosi, Babylon Babies has as its hero a hard-boiled leatherneck veteran of Sarajevo named Thoorop who is hired by a mysterious source to escort a young woman named Marie Zorn from Russia to Canada. A garden variety job, he figures. But when Thoorop is offered an even higher fee by another organisation, he realises Marie is no ordinary girl. A schizophrenic and the possible carrier of a new artificial virus, Marie is carrying a mutant embryo created by an America cult that dreams of producing a genetically modified messiah, a dream that spells out the end of human life as we know it. Inspired by Philip K. Dick, William S. Burroughs, Gilles Deleuze, and other extrapolationists of the future, Babylon Babies unfolds at breakneck speed as Thoorop risks his life to save Marie, whose brain - linking to the neuromatrix - loses all limits and becomes the universe itself. Exploring the symbiosis between organic matter and computer power to spin new forms of consciousness, Maurice Dantec rides Nietzsche's prophecy: "Man is something to be overcome."

We've been told back in November that the film was being prepared in two distinct versions - Kassovitz’ intended, longer cut for mainland European release and a Fox-mandated shorter version for release in the rest of the world.  At the time of that report, word was that the full version would run two hours and forty minutes - for the math impaired that’s one hundred and sixty minutes - but no details were known about the shorter Fox version.  Well, no more.

The Fox version has been submitted to the UK’s BBFC for certification and the version turned in there ran a mere ninety minutes, meaning if that hundred and sixty minute number is accurate Fox have cut a full seventy minutes - nearly half the run time - from Kassovitz’ picture.  Even worse, the BBFC have rated the film 12A, which is the equivalent of a soft PG-13 in the US - many PG-13 films are rated 15 in the UK - meaning there can’t be much action or violence left in the picture whatsoever.  With some directors this wouldn’t be an issue but Kassovitz is the man who made La Haine and Crimson Rivers and there’s absolutely no way he set out to make a PG-13 rated action picture, no way at all.  The best we can do at the moment is hold out until its August 29th release date and make sure to make our complaints as loud as possible. Let Fox know they shouldn't mess with movies like this!!!

No need to worry, folks. Problems like that are business as usual to any major project like Babylon A.D.

13.3.2007

The lack of snow still causes trouble for the Babylon A.D. shooting. The short trip to Iceland brought no solution. It remains unclear where the footage which will take 8 days of shooting should take place.

10.3.2007

Shooting continues after a lot of trouble and a two-week pause where some people like a untalented stunt-coordinator got fired and new crew people hired. ;)

Last week the Babylon A.D. crew was shooting in the area Vítkovice, by the end of this week they should move to the skeleton of a building opposite the culture house in Ostrava.

15.1.2007

First pictures from a huge action scene shooting in Ostrava, Czech Republic where Vin Diesel resides in Imperial Hotel under a different name. As we heard he's not into big star things and usually his food is delivered to the room.
Vin Diesel appeared yesterday on set, but in the scene where begging kids are throwing stones on his big limousine, a double was sitting behind the wheel. The scene shot in the scenery you see below with a crashed Mi-24 (helicopter) and a Chaika (popular soviet car) is probably  taking 90 seconds of the movie. The next 14 days will be more shootings like that in the area before the crew around Matthieu Kassovietz and Vin Diesel will go back to Barranov Studios, Prague, to shoot until April.
