Fans of gravelly-voiced bald scifi heroes rejoice: Universal has announced that it will be releasing a third Chronicles of Riddick movie in the US, with international rights being auctioned off at the Berlin Film Festival.

The third movie, to be titled Riddick, will be written and directed by the man behind the first two movies in the series, David Twohy, and co-produced by Twohy and star Vin Diesel. Although plot details are unreleased, Variety suggests that the movie will be closer in tone to Pitch Black than Chronicles.

Fast & Furious DVD and Blu-ray out- including Vin’s Short Movie!

July 30, 2009 - The cast and crew of Fast & Furious came out to the Citywalk Cinemas near Universal Studios, Hollywood to celebrate the DVD and Blu-ray release ofFast & Furious, the fourth film in the high-octane action franchise. The event included a screening of “Los Bandoleros,” a short film directed by Fast & Furious star Vin Diesel included exclusively as an extra on the two-disc special edition DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Filmed on a shoestring budget in the Dominican Republic, “Los Bandoleros” is a prequel of sorts to Fast & Furious and shows the backstory of the elaborate heist pulled off by Dominic Toretto (Diesel) at the beginning of the film.

Fast & Furious director Justin Lin – who also helmed the third film in the series, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift – told IGN in a red-carpet interview that he spent a lot of time on the set talking to Diesel about his character and the directing process.

“He came in to talk to me about shooting it and it was really great because I come from the indie, no-budget world,” Lin said. “And that’s where he came from, too. So we had some great conversations about how to accomplish his vision for basically no money. So it was amazing to be on set with all these trailers and hundreds of crew members and talk about how you’re going to do guerilla filmmaking.”

Lin added that he had already worked out the backstory for the heist before the idea of a prequel short had even been conceived.

“It’s funny because before I knew this was even in the works, I’d spent hours and hours with Vin talking about the backstory, how the characters met up and it’s fun to realize they would actually go shoot this. So it’s always good times.”In terms of his own directing style, Lin said that he had to adjust it for the film, which had a completely different look and feel than Tokyo Drift.
“That’s the thing that really intrigued me about coming back because I had no interest in coming back and just doing the same thing,” he said. “And the one thing, when the question was asked, I found it very interesting because it became very clear that the only way you would make a fourth one is if you could convince all the actors to come back. And once I was able to do that, the next challenge was what should we do about the movie? And the thing that I love is that if you look at all four films, stylistically they’re all different. And the one great thing is that it’s been about eight years since the first film. And the actors have grown. The characters have grown. So I think I was trying to hopefully create a style to reflect the maturity of the characters.”

Next up on the red carpet was actress Mirtha Michelle, who played a relatively small role at the beginning of Fast & Furious. She said that her character was expanded for “Bandoleros.”

“I continued my character of Cara from Fast & Furious,” she said. “And in ‘Los Bandoleros’ we get to see a little bit more of this character and kind of how she ended up with Sung Kang’s character in the movie. So it’s actually really great. I say it’s like City of God. It’s very gritty and intense.”

One thing viewers will not see is a lot of fast cars and action scenes to compare with the feature film.

“There’s not a lot of fast cars, it’s all character driven,” Michelle said. “You get the feel of the characters more.”

Though it was Diesel’s first outing as a director, she said that his experience as an actor helped the cast feel at ease right away.

“Everyone was like, ‘Oh my God, are you scared?’ No, he was so amazing. And because he’s an actor he was so able to understand how to speak to actors. So that was really exciting. Like for me, for example, Vin wanted her very, very Latin, and very like spicy, very fiery. I remember telling him, I feel like I’m a Dominican from New York. And I’m not, I’m from Miami, but that’s how it felt.”

Finally, Diesel arrived to the sound of cheers from visiting tourists who could see his image projected on a screen above the plaza. He talked about the tips he’d gotten from Lin while on the set of Fast & Furious.

“I had to pick his brain on the set, mainly because he’s a partner in creating this whole thing,” Diesel said. “And it was important to make the short film and the feature film speak to one another.”

For Diesel, directing the short film was a chance not only to get some experience behind the camera, but to prove that he had the chops for a feature film. In particular, he has ambitions to direct a long-gestating film based on the true-life story of Hannibal.

“I would love to direct a big feature,” he said. “It’s not always easy to convince Hollywood to let the guy direct a big film like Hannibal, but trust me, I want it. I’m dying to, only because I’ve seen the scenes in my head for six, seven years already. And I have a very clear idea of the story I want to tell about a man’s life that has enough material there for seven, eight, nine movies.”

With sequels to Chronicles of Riddick and xXx also in the works, Diesel is clearly not reluctant to reprise his older characters. It all depends on the quality of the writing and the strength of the story, he said.

“It takes me a while to return to the character. I have to really buy into the story, I have to believe in the story. And if I don’t, then I pass and hope someday we’ll get it right.”

Fast & Furious was released on DVD and Blu-ray on July 28.
